Blairgowrie at a glance

Blairgowrie is one of Johannesburg’s most beloved "hidden gems." Located in the heart of Randburg, it is famous for its leafy, tree-lined streets and its incredibly strong sense of community. Often described as a "village in the city," Blairgowrie offers a relaxed, family-oriented lifestyle where neighbours actually know each other. With the massive Delta Park right on its doorstep, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, dog walkers, and young families looking for space and tranquillity without leaving the city.

Location: Blairgowrie is perfectly positioned for easy commuting. It is bordered by Bram Fischer Drive to the west (adjacent to Robindale and Linden) and the lush Delta Park to the east (bordering Victory Park and Craighall Park).

The suburb stretches from Republic Road on its northern border (near the Randburg CBD and Bordeaux) down to Conrad Drive and the Spruit on its southern side (adjacent to Linden and Pine Park).

History of Blairgowrie

Like its neighbour Linden, Blairgowrie was originally part of a large farm—the Braamfontein farm—owned by the Geldenhuys family. The farm was bought by William Grey Rattray in 1890 and renamed it Craighail.  In 1928, his daughter would rename part of the land on the farm after her father, Rattray's birthplace, Blairgowrie in Scotland in Britain.

In the 1940s and 50s, the land was subdivided to accommodate the post-war housing boom - making it Johanesburg's second-largest suburb by land area.

An interesting quirk of the suburb is its street names: almost all the streets in Blairgowrie start with the letter "B" (think Barkston, Blairgowrie, and Burnside), a nod to its identity that makes navigation a fun challenge for newcomers!

Over the decades, it evolved from a quiet outskirts area into a trendy, middle-class hub. While the original 1950s and 60s houses still stand, many have been beautifully renovated by young professionals, blending mid-century charm with modern design. Today, it’s known for having one of the most active community associations in South Africa, which has helped transform the area into a safe and vibrant "Community Improvement District.
