Erinvale Golf Estate at a glance
Erinvale Golf Estate is a prime 284-hectare residential and golf estate at the foot of the Helderberg Mountain in Somerset West, Cape Town. Renowned as one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations, Erinvale offers a lifestyle defined by mountain grandeur, top golf facilities, and an atmosphere of refined tranquility. Framed by the Hottentots Holland mountain peaks and bordering the historic Lourensford and Vergelegen wine estates, Erinvale provides a sanctuary where fynbos-covered slopes meet perfectly manicured fairways.
The estate is divided into two distinct halves: the "flat" parkland section near the clubhouse and the "mountain" section that climbs the slopes, offering breathtaking panoramic views of False Bay and the surrounding vineyards.
The History of Erinvale
The land on which Erinvale sits carries deep historical significance, originally forming part of the original Vergelegen farm granted to Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1667. Jacobus van der Heiden bought the farm in 1707 and divided it into 3 portions - of which Welgelegen, the present Erinvale, was one. Welgelegen was used for fruit farming and cattle ad passed through many old Helderberg families such as the Theunissens, Munniks, Morkels, Buisinnes and the Hendricks.
Edward Strangman, an Irishman, bought the property in 1868 and changed the name in memory of his home country into Erin Vale" (Irish valley). His daughters Kathleen and Doreen were the last people to farm at Erin Vale. In 1989, the land was acquired by developer and owner of the adjacent Lourensford Estate, David Gant, who succeeded in getting municipal permission in 1990 to develop a golf course. The five-star boutique Erinvale Estate Hotel was established in 1994.
Gant envisioned a world-class golf estate that would preserve the natural beauty of the Lourens River valley. He commissioned golf legend Gary Player to design the 18-hole championship course, which officially opened in 1995. Erinvale quickly gained international acclaim, hosting the 1996 World Cup of Golf just one year after opening—an event that firmly established Somerset West on the global map. Today, the estate remains a benchmark for luxury estate living in the Western Cape and is ranked as a Top 20 suburb (estate) in South Africa.
The Golf Course and Lifestyle
Erinvale is a Gary Player designed 18-hole Championship parkland course with a championship course layout design, is ranked 25th in South Africa's top 100 golf courses. It is a tale of two nines. The front nine (the "low road") meanders through the flatter valley floor with various water features and mature trees, while the back nine (the "high road") climbs the mountain slopes, demanding accuracy and offering spectacular vistas.
Beyond golf, the estate promotes an active, outdoor lifestyle:
- Clubhouse: A stately Cape Vernacular building featuring a pro shop, bar, and restaurant with an expansive terrace overlooking the 18th green - a social hub where residents can unwind and enjoy the views of the surrounding landscape.
- Erinvale Hotel & Spa: Situated adjacent to the estate, this award-winning boutique hotel and spa offers fine dining at Stefan’s and world-class wellness treatments for residents and visitors alike.
- Outdoor Activities: Residents enjoy private access to hiking and mountain biking trails that lead directly into the Helderberg Nature Reserve. The estate also features tennis and squash courts and a sparkling communal pool. A kid’s playground area for Erinvale children also has outdoor tables and seating facilities for parents and Nannies, which was well adopted by families.
Security and Conservation Measures
Erinvale is a pioneer in secure estate management, prioritizing "invisible" yet ironclad safety: providing a perfect lock-up-and-go lifestyle to homeowners
- Advanced Surveillance: 24-hour manned access control, biometric scanning for residents and staff, and a perimeter protected by sophisticated thermal cameras and electric fencing. Each property on the estate has since 2016 been connected with Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) to provide for high-speed internet services by Openserve/Telkom.
- Constant Patrols: Highly trained security personnel conduct regular patrols on foot, bicycles, and vehicles throughout the 284-hectare property.
- Conservation: The Erinvale Estate Hotel solar system generates up to half of the estate’s energy requirements and allow the estate to run offgrid for up to 8 hours. This allows the estate to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure a reliable electricity supply during any unplanned power outages. Additional trees have been planted during the last few years by the Erinvale Golf Club - to especially replace the Oak Trees which had been infected by Polyphagus Shot Hole Borer (PSHB). Erinvale comprises 10 dams and 2 wetlands on the Estate and Golf Course.
- Erinvale Spotlight App was launched to give homeowners and members a platform to exchange information and pictures.
