Villiersdorp At A Glance
Villiersdorp was founded in 1843 and forms part of the Overberg region and the Cape Country Meander. The town's roads are lined with oak and gum trees, providing not only shade and shelter, but also a beautiful backdrop (especially in autumn) for the town's old Victorian houses, cottages and smallholdings. There are also two picturesque residential estates along the Theewaterskloof dam - Theewaterskloof Country Estate and Gloria Bay.
The Villiersdorp valley is known for its viticulture (for wine and preserve syrup or moskonfyt) and since the building of the Theewaterskloof dam in the 1970's, also for its deciduous fruit farming.
Villiersdorp is conveniently located - only a 30 minutes' drive (33km) away from the restaurant capital of South Africa, Franschhoek, 59 minutes (62 km) from Paarl, an hour from Stellenbosch (64km) and 74 minutes (94 km) from Cape Town International Airport.
The town has a population of 7398 adults of whom about 57% speaks Afrikaans as a first language, 25% Xhosa, 13% Sotho and 3,4 % English.

The surrounding mountains and nature reserves like the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve (to the south of the Theewaterskloof dam) offer expansive areas of beautiful countryside which one can enjoy by foot, mountain bike or on 4x4 trails. There are also organised nature walks, cycles and drives through the local farms and surrounding nature reserves to enjoy an abundance of birdlife and rare fynbos that is characteristic of the area.
The Theewaterskloof Sports Club (with a bar and restaurant) offers a variety of water sports - including angling competitions, kiteboarding, skiing, parasailing, tubing and sailing competitions. The Theewaterskloof Golf Club, a top 9 hole golf course (with 18 tees) with mountain views and a lakeside setting in between fynbos. The 19th hole (bar) offers breakfast and light meals.
The popular seaside towns of Kleinmond (49 min) and Hermanus (56 min) are all within easy reach. The Franschhoek pass is one of 4 mountain passes in to Villiersdorp. Besides from its beautiful vistas, it also offers a mountain water spring where you can collect water.
There are a variety of eateries and coffee shops in Villiersdorp - e.g. Ou Meul Restaurant, Kelkiewyn Café, The Aphrodisiac Shack (a smokehouse / charcuterie & deli with a picnic option next to the dam), Tea At Country Classics and the Aalwyn Vincent Padstal. The Linquenda Private Kitchen & Country Classics on Fridays are also very popular.
The Villiersdorp community celebrates its annual harvest festival every year in October - at the end of the winter fruit season.
Villiersdorp forms part of the Worcester wine and olive route and its relative cool micro-climate has resulted in the production of some outstanding and award-winning wines. Some of the local wineries are Stettyn Wine Cellar and Villiersdorp Wine Cellar.
There are a variety of art studios in Villiersdorp - i.a. the Gustav Bester Studio and the Dale Elliot Art Gallery - whilst the Dagbreek Museum & Info Centre also hosts a variety of local artists. Many of the about 50 artist living in Villiersdorp offers painting courses which runs throughout the year and which is suited to any level of experience. The wide range of artists living in the town includes sculptors, painters and photographers.
The local boarding school, De Villiers Graaff High School, was founded by Sir David Graaf and his brother Jacobus in 1907. There is also a De Villiers Graaff Primary School as well as the Kosie de Wet Primary School and Elandsrivier Primary School in Villiersdorp. Villiersdorp Secondary School is located in Buitekant Street.
