Lourens River Annual Ramble 2015
This annual Ramble takes place on Saturday 12th December and is organised by the committee of the Lourens River Conservation Society. This year we are walking up river from the river mouth to the section behind Lourens River Estate on Bizweni Road. This ramble is suitable for all the family; dogs on leash are also welcome.
The walk will start at 9 am in the parking area at the top end of De Beers Road/next to the bridge as you come into Strand on Beach Road.
We will meander up the river and cross the river at the 1927 bridge at the end of Lourensriver Road Strand We will then proceed with Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary on our left and the river on our right. We will cross the road at the Victoria St pedestrian light or go under the bridge at Broadway and continue along Victoria Park to the T2/N2, again going under the bridge or cross at the pedestrian light in Victoria Road . At the Sergeant Street Bridge we move onto the road (Lourens Street) for a short distance before going under the railway bridge. We now move onto a rehabilitated section and then go under the Andries Pretorius Bridge and walk along the newly flood alleviated section behind Pick’n Pay. We will cross Main Road at the pedestrian light at Gordon Road .Before crossing the Historic bridge you may wish to have a beer at Old Bridge Tavern.Then proceed up next to the river via Stormhaven Park to the top of ERF 448 behind Lourens River Estate.
Here there will be time to relax as there will be Braai fires ready and you will have the opportunity to chat about the walk and get a better overview of the river from some of the members of the Society .Boerewors and cool drinks will be on sale. The walk will take between 90 minutes and 2 hours.
The Lourens River is part of our heritage and must be preserved for our future children.
The Lourens River Conservation Society Mission Statement
1. Main Mission – Conservation of the river in as near natural state as realistically possible. This recognises that the flood alleviated river is a best compromise between an ideal natural river and an engineered drainage channel demanded by the urban development impact.
2. We strive to achieve our mission by monitoring river conditions and developments with appropriate follow-up reporting and action wherever possible.
3. By anti-litter Activities and related public education efforts.
4. By suitable PNE improvement projects, encouraging public participation.
5. By active and effective representation on the Management Advisory Committee and on the Flood Alleviation Project phases.
6. By growing our Society Membership.
7. By fund raising to support our objectives and continuing existence.
